Mission Statement

The mission of the SJMS Summer Learning Camp is to provide a quality program that enhances and continues learning throughout the summer months. Each participant will have the opportunity to continue his/her educational journey through academically enriching classes in which the learner is the focus. Each offering is geared toward the development of the whole learner and it is our hope that by the end of each learning experience, the student will leave with a better knowledge and understanding of self and the world. It is our goal to enable participants to grow through the experiences provided on a daily basis. We hope that you can find our flexibility and wide range of classes exciting and useful.

Facilities

SJMS has a summer atmosphere of casual learning fun. The campus is situated on a large plot of green space located in the Italian Village of Central Ohio. We have extensive use of the classrooms and gym as well as the play area outside. The classrooms are air- conditioned for student comfort and the rooms are equipped with furniture appropriate to the learner. A full staff of qualified personnel is available to help facilitate the classes.

Staff

The staff at St. Joseph Montessori Learning Camp is compiled of many talented and qualified people. For the Children’s House and Lower Elementary programs we strive to have Montessori or State certified head teachers with assistants having previous or current experience in teaching or day care. We feel the staff compiled for this summer’s camp consists of many wonderful teachers and assistants. For the Upper Elementary Staff we look for qualified teachers, business people, or specialty personnel to help teach and guide the upper elementary students in the course offered.

General Information

The program at SJMS has three levels of involvement.  These three levels are classified as Children’s House,  Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary.

The Children’s House program is based on a weekly theme as determined by the Instructor of the week. This program incorporates aspects of the academic school year by including similar schedules, Montessori works and instruction, and Kindergarten opportunities. The age of the participant for the Children’s House program is 3 years old through Kindergarten.

The Lower Elementary program is currently based on a weekly theme as determined by the Instructor of the week. This program also incorporates aspects of the academic school year with a day camp flavor. The student has the opportunity to learn from the various lessons and works about that particular theme and a hands-on learning approach is used. Montessori philosophies are incorporated throughout the week and this program involves more in-depth learning. Off-campus educational and social trips, as well as provided practice in academic areas make this a great program for the student who ranges from 1st through 4th grade.

The Upper Elementary program involves the 5th through 8th grader and all SJMS Alumni. Some of these classes are offered for the fourth grader (see registration form)  For this age group, the program offers mini-courses that last for the morning or afternoon.  Some classes extend longer and are indicated in the course description. These classes isolate skills and interests of the student of this age group and off-campus trips are common to further enhance the content of the course being taken.
